Kansas City was one of eight metro areas accepted to the Global Cities Initiative (GCI) Exchange in 2015. Launched in 2012, the GCI helps business and civic leaders grow their metropolitan economies by strengthening international connections and competitiveness.
The GCI consists of a 28-metro-area network selected by the Brookings Institution through a competitive process based on the community’s readiness and commitment to pursue the Exchange’s global competitiveness principles. GCI activities include producing data and research to guide decision, fostering practice and policy innovations, and facilitating its Exchange, a peer-learning network. The initiative is a five-year joint project of the Brookings Institution and JPMorgan Chase. Kansas City is developing a metropolitan global trade and investment plan as part of the region’s participation in the Global Cities Initiative. A steering committee was created to develop a metropolitan export plan in 2015 in order to assist Kansas City’s involvement in the Exchange. The GCI Steering Committee is seeking feedback on international trade efforts in KC.
