Data Center Sales Tax Exemption Program
RACKSPACE
Rackspace is a global provider of cloud and managed services located in the KCI Corridor. Rackspace, a 100% green company, underwent significant upgrades and expansion to bring its data center to a Tier 4 grade back in 2016. The upgrades included new generators for better fuel capacity, new panel and feeder boards and cooling units. The upgrade allowed Rackspace’s Platte County location to be able to host disaster recovery applications for companies on both coasts.
Rackspace currently employs 50 people in Platte County, and the company expects that to increase to 90 in the near future. When looking to upgrade, the company says they are ‘exactly where they want to be” in Platte County, citing lower power and cooling costs compared with the national average. Rackspace has consistently been recognized for its 100% uptime by Netcraft. In addition to the Kansas City location, Rackspace operates data centers in New York, Ashburn VA, Silicon Valley, Iceland, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore.
TIERPOINT
TierPoint is a provider of cloud, managed services and colocation. TierPoint’s Kansas City data center is one of two state-of-the-art TierPoint facilities located in the Kansas City metro area. With redundant power and cooling infrastructures, this facility is concurrently maintainable allowing for continuous operation of critical IT equipment. The 27,000 square feet Platte County facility includes 5,700 square feet of production raised floor space plus cabinets, cages, and suites that can be customized to meet precise requirements. Tierpoint has 38 data centers located all over the US.
MASTERCARD INTERNATIONAL
In 2003, MasterCard International began work on a $50 million backup data center located in the KCI Corridor. Kansas City was chosen over 18 other locations, and MasterCard moved its backup processing center from suburban New York. The company’s main processing center is in St. Louis, so MasterCard officials wanted the backup center to be nearer St. Louis. In case of a disruption at either location, operations will switch immediately to the other. Ninety people work at the Platte County location, a 87,000-square-foot building.
LIBERTY MUTUAL
Since 1912, Liberty Mutual has been committed to providing broad, useful and competitively-priced insurance products and services to meet their customer’s ever-changing needs. This Boston company purchased the former State Street Data Center in 2003 to serve as a backup data processing facility of their east coast operations. That investment was over $80 million. Liberty Mutual chose Kansas City because of the data center being available and more importantly, the team of players locally and from the state that worked collaboratively to bring Liberty Mutual to Kansas City. The data center currently employs 93 people.
ENTERPRISE DATA CENTER
|Through a joint venture partnership Lincoln Rackhouse acquired this data center campus in 2018. Available for lease, this multi-tenant enterprise data center, offers concurrently maintainable infrastructure, in two separate buildings, designed for flexible data hall and density requirements.
