Weston Award: Beverlin’s Statuary

Located in the heart of downtown Weston, Beverlin’s Statuary is more than just a store – it’s a treasure trove of timeless artistry. This family-owned business has been creating and selling custom craft concrete statues for over 30 years, each piece a testament to the craftsmanship and care that goes into creating art meant to last a lifetime.

Owners Mel and Mary Beverlin are heavily involved within the Weston community, participating in many of the city’s events like Applefest. Notably, the Beverlin’s provide the Big Foot statue for Weston Chamber of Commerce’s annual Big Foot Search. This event brings hundreds of people to town, hunting for the illusive life-sized statue while learning about Weston’s historic past.

Mayor Stelljes says, “Mel and Mary Beverlin have shared their incredible talents and passion with the Weston community for over 30 years. We often talk of the people behind the scenes, and the Beverlin’s participating in events like Applefest and the Big Foot Search helps to ensure their success. Riverside Award: Mid-Continent Public Library

Mid-Continent Public Library is a three-county library system that continues to make innovative strides throughout the Kansas City region. This past June marked an exciting milestone with the opening of the brand-new Riverside library branch.

As part of the library’s Capital Improvement Plan, which voters strongly supported in 2016, the original Riverside location was slated to be renovated. However, the building was falling apart. That’s when the City of Riverside stepped in and contributed $2 million dollars to ensure a new, modern library for their community. The 12,500-square-foot facility features a community programing room, children and teen areas, outdoors seating, and updated technology.

Mayor Rose says, “The library has been an important part of Riverside for many years. When MCPL committed to building a new facility in partnership with the City, it helped transform the heart of our community. Every aspect, from the building’s design to its location adjacent to Welcome Plaza, has made this project an incredible success. The new branch has also significantly increased visitor numbers, highlight the importance and relevance of libraries in our communities.”
