How do I access the workforce?

Platte County and the Kansas City metro area have many programs to place workers in available positions. Institutions of higher education, state offices and placement agencies all work together. All education centers listed below have career placement services available. These employment partners work together with area businesses to provide a well trained, educated and willing workforce. These synergies produce an abundant and exemplary workforce for Platte County businesses.

MCC-Maple Woods is part of the Metropolitan Community College (MCC) system and offers associate programs along with transfer and occupational programs. The MCC system operates throughout the Kansas City metro area and is an important resource for employers. Also within the MCC system is the Business & Technology College which as been instrumental in providing special training programs for area employers.

Park University in Parkville, is a Master's Degree-granting comprehensive college. The main campus is in Parkville but Park University has locations nationwide and throughout the metro area. Park offers many majors including specialization in sports medicine and international business. The college also has a job placement office at the Parkville campus and is eager to assist their students and area employers. Park has large business, management and computer degree programs offered for working adults, and an MBA degree program among others.

The Northland Career Center, located in Platte City, offers many training programs such as health services, marketing, diesel mechanics and many others. The school has a vocational evaluation center for individual assessment, a learning center for basic skills, a vocational program for disabled or disadvantaged students and several programs for adult students. For many years the Center has been a supplier of excellent workers.

However, if it becomes necessary to look outside of Platte County, again there are many programs to choose from. GreatHires is the state department of employment security and works with employers to provide jobs to those looking for employment in the area. There are offices throughout the metro area and in St. Joseph, to the north, providing a huge base from which to select potential employees.

The Kansas Division offers the same kind of service to employees and employers. Offices close by include Leavenworth and Atchison.

The Metro of Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) offers several north and southbound routes for the KCI corridor. There are several park & ride lots throughout the system. They offer a program for area businesses and employees called Transit Riders Incentive Plan (TRIP). It offers discounts and savings for participants, which translates to a more profitable bottom line by decreasing employee-related costs.

The Full Employment Council is a private, not-for-profit organization that works with businesses, potential employees and the community to reduce unemployment, underemployment and public fund dependency. It has programs available at many levels including youth, adult and business. The FEC has several branch offices and affiliated agencies including one in the Northland. FEC is also the contracted operator of the State’s One-Stop Career Centers. The Platte County EDC office is pleased to offer one location for the FEC’s services.
