Communities

Within the 421 square miles that make up Platte County there are 18 communities including: Kansas City, Parkville, Platte City, Riverside and Weston. In addition, a large portion of Platte County land remains under control of the County government. From the historic to the newly developed, our communities feature a wide variety of great natural resources, shopping and dining options, attractions and many other unique reasons to call them home. Platte County’s school districts are regularly recognized for their exemplary performance.

Each community has its own distinct personality, but all reap the benefits of the wealth of services, facilities, stability, employment opportunities and quality of life that Platte County has to offer. With our growing population, which has increased 7.6% since 2010 and an incredible 23% since 2000, Platte County has proven to be a place people wish to live and work.

Kansas City:

Population : (43,676 of Kansas City’s population of 2,393,623 resides in Platte County)

Twenty percent of Platte County’s square miles falls within the city limits of Kansas City and 46% of Platte County’s population resides in Kansas City. Platte County is home to the Kansas City International Airport. KCI and the area surrounding (commonly called the KCI corridor) is considered a major employment hub not only for Platte County but the entire metro area as well.

Parkville

Population: 6,296

Parkville is located in the southern area of Platte County, overlooking the Missouri River. It is well known for its historic shops and restaurants that people come from miles around to visit. Parkville is home to the beautiful Park University, a four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1875 as well as the The National Golf Club, a private golf course designed by the legendary Tom Watson.

Platte City

Population: 5,200

Platte City is the county seat for Platte County. Platte City is located in the northern area of Platte County, approximately 5 miles north of the Kansas City International Airport. Platte City’s intersection at Interstate 29 and Highway 92 has seen major development, spurring a significant growth in all sectors including housing, retail and restaurants.

Riverside

Population: 3,046

Riverside is located just a few minutes from downtown Kansas City, in the southwest tip of Platte County. Weston

Population: 1,703

Historic Weston is nestled among the high bluffs of the Missouri River, just minutes north of KCI Airport. Ski slopes, state parks, orchards and scenic roadways surround the small river town there visitors can explore over 100 pre-Civil War structures, museums, an award winning winery, a distillery and brewery.
